One in five credit reports
has an error on it.

The FTC says so. We've pulled thousands of files — they're not wrong. Here's exactly how to find yours, dispute it, and get the points back the bureau was accidentally keeping from you.

· The five steps

It's a process.
Not a miracle.

01

Pull all three bureaus on the same day.

AnnualCreditReport.com is the only federally authorized source — free weekly, all three bureaus. Equifax, Experian, TransUnion each report slightly different data. An error on one isn't always on the others.

02

Build a line-by-line list.

Go account by account. Circle anything wrong: balance, payment status, open/closed date, account holder, duplicate tradeline, account you don't recognize. If an identical collection shows up twice on the same bureau — that's two disputes.

03

File ONE dispute per error. Online and in writing.

File online for the paper trail, then mail a certified letter. Yes both. Online forces the 30-day clock. The letter locks in legal specificity. Include the report number, the account, and the exact correction requested.

04

Wait 30 days. Then verify.

The bureau has 30 days (45 if you added new info mid-cycle) to investigate. After that window, pull the report again. If the error persists with no response — you escalate to the CFPB. Don't skip the receipt step.

05

Repeat for the other two bureaus.

A dispute filed with Experian does not touch TransUnion. If the same error is on all three, you file three separate disputes. Same evidence, three envelopes.

· Watch-outs

Four mistakes
that get disputes denied.

Mistake 01

Disputing a real debt hoping it falls off.

This is the #1 reason disputes get denied. Bureaus verify with the creditor. If it's real, it stays — and now the creditor flags you as a disputer, which can re-age the account. Only dispute actual errors.

Mistake 02

Using a credit repair company that pays disputes by the pound.

Most paid-dispute mills file the same boilerplate against every tradeline. Bureaus started marking frivolous in 2020. You pay $800 for nothing and a frustrated file.

Mistake 03

Paying a collection before disputing verification.

A paid collection is still a collection. Sometimes paying re-ages the tradeline and drops your score. Dispute validity first. Then ask about a pay-for-delete in writing. Never pay a collector by phone with no agreement.

Mistake 04

Filing the dispute the day before your mortgage pull.

Open disputes block automated underwriting on conventional loans. Resolve or withdraw before the lender pulls. Tell your LO what's open — they'll time the pull around it.

· The letter

Copy this.
Fill the brackets.

Cites FCRA Section 611 — the section that gives you the 30-day clock. Credit repair companies charge $200+ for this letter. We charge $0. Mail it certified.
