So we did the research ourselves. Cross-referenced Google, Yelp, Angi, BBB, HomeAdvisor, Expertise.com. Looked at years in business, review volume, what real homeowners actually said. Pulled the top five in each category.

Real review volume
5 stars from 3 reviews means nothing. We weight contractors with consistent ratings across hundreds of reviews.
Years in business
Longevity matters. We favor contractors who've been in their community for years, not week-old LLCs.
Local + accountable
Local means invested. Means accountable to neighbors. Means a name and reputation worth protecting.
Try yourself first
Ten fixes you don’t need a contractor for.
Before you call somebody, see if it’s on this list. Half of the most-Googled homeowner emergencies are 10-minute fixes with a $5 part.
Running toilet
Worn flapper valve, 90% of the time. $5 part, ten minutes.
Clogged drain
Plunger first. Drain snake second. Skip the chemicals — they eat older pipes.
Squeaky hinge
Pop the pin, dab petroleum jelly on it, pop it back. Two minutes.
Tripped breaker
Find the panel, flip the middle-position breaker fully off, then back on.
HVAC filter
Check monthly, swap every 1–3 months. A dirty filter costs you in energy bills.
Leaky faucet
Worn washer or O-ring. Shut off water, disassemble handle, swap part. YouTube has the rest.
Garbage disposal stuck
Red reset button on the bottom. Press it. If it's jammed, Allen wrench in the bottom socket frees the blades.
Drywall hole
Nail hole: spackle, sand, paint. Fist-sized: drywall patch kit, $10 at the hardware store.
Showerhead pressure
Unscrew it, soak overnight in white vinegar. Mineral deposits dissolve, pressure comes back.
Squeaky floor
From below: drive a screw up through subfloor into finished floor. From above: talc between the boards.
Know your limits
DIY is great for small fixes. Anything involving the electrical panel, gas lines, structural changes, or roof work — call somebody licensed. The money you save is not worth the risk.

What cities does the contractor directory cover?
We currently have researched contractors in Pittsburgh PA, Cleveland OH, Philadelphia PA, Columbus OH, Charlotte NC, Indianapolis IN, and Detroit MI — 12 categories and 5 contractors per category in each city. More cities are coming.
