You've been told 620 isn't enough. It is. Here's how to get there —or past it.
Most mortgage sites say “fix your credit and come back.” We're not going to do that. We're going to show you exactly how, step by step, with a plan you can print, follow, and check off. No shame. No gatekeeping. Just math and a month-by-month pace.
The credit advice your group chat is giving you is mostly wrong.
“You need an 800 score to buy a house.”
FHA starts at 580. Most conventional programs open at 620. The 800 thing was invented by people selling you credit products.
“Checking your credit hurts your score.”
A soft pull (what you do) is zero impact. A hard pull (what a lender does) is 3–5 points and fades. Mortgage shopping inside a 14–45 day window counts as ONE inquiry by law.
“Closing old cards helps your score.”
It almost always hurts. You lose average account age AND available credit — which spikes your utilization ratio. Keep old cards open. Charge a subscription to them. Pay it off. Done.
“Paying off collections fixes your score.”
Sometimes it drops it (re-ages the account). The right move depends on the age, amount, and scoring model your lender uses. This is where most people lose points trying to do the right thing.
Move the sliders. Watch the math change.
This is the same logic a rapid-rescore tool uses — simplified for education. Real moves depend on your full file. But the shape of the answer is right: small changes move tiers, tiers move rates, rates move dollars.
Back in your pocket instead of the bank's. That's not a typo.
Estimates only · Not a promise · Real rates depend on the full file
Every credit plan on earth is six levers pulled in the right order.
Pay your cards down to under 30% of the limit (under 10% is better). This is the fastest legal score boost that exists.
Get added to a relative's seasoned card with perfect history. The card's age and limit get imported onto your file. No, you don't get a physical card.
One in five credit reports has an error. Pull all three bureaus. Flag anything wrong. File disputes with documentation. Bureaus have 30 days to investigate.
35% of your score is payment history. Autopay the minimums on every account. One missed payment can cost 80 points. Don't miss.
Secured loan through a credit union or app like Self. You pay $25/mo into a locked account, they report on-time payments. Cheap way to add installment history.
Your lender can push verified updates to the bureaus mid-process. Pay down a card before closing? Rapid rescore can move you up a tier and change your rate.
From where you are to where you need to be.
Not the “it takes years” story. The actual month-by-month math. Most of our borrowers move up a tier in under 90 days once they stop doing the wrong things.
We're not judging your score. We're building your plan.
Run the readiness check. It takes five minutes, pulls nothing, and gives you the exact three moves to make next — based on your score, your debts, and where you want to be.
